History:

In 1995, a group of volunteers with similar interests held
its first organizational meeting and became incorporated
by the state of Maryland on May 15, 1997 as Maryland
Friends of Midwives, Inc. (MFM).  On January 28, 1999,
MFM received 501(c)3 nonprofit status from the IRS.  After
years of raising funds to do educational and charitable
work as well as support midwives facing legal challenges,
    MFM became inactive.

In May 2009, a small group of volunteers gathered together
to once again organize MFM and work towards organizing
MFM as a nonprofit and growing the membership of
consumers and birth professionals to provide support for
area midwives in addition to educating the public about
midwifery and out-of-hospital birth especially homebirth.

Today we have a growing membership of consumers from
all over Maryland working to support our area midwives and
to create better access to midwives!

    Goals:

  • To ensure women have the ability to choose midwifery care
whether they plan to birth in a hospital, birth center or home.

  • To protect midwives' ability to practice openly and independently
                   without harassment.

  • To increase public awareness of the benefits of midwifery care
and the services midwives offer to Maryland families.

  • To educate the public about out-of-hospital birth, including the
safety of birth center birth and homebirth.

  • To increase the number of midwives in Maryland.

  • To advocate for legislation which improves and supports access
to midwifery care for all Maryland families.
